Janmabhoomi
The sacred birthplaces where Vishnu descended to earth — Ram Lalla at Ayodhya and Bal Krishna at Mathura.
2 TemplesThe Janmabhoomi shrines mark the very ground where, in Hindu tradition, Vishnu took human birth — the janmasthans of his two most beloved avatars. At Ayodhya on the Sarayu, Rama was born to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya of the Solar dynasty; at Mathura on the Yamuna, Krishna was born at midnight in the prison of the tyrant Kamsa. To stand at a janmabhoomi is to stand where the divine story of an age began.
Both cities rank among the Sapta Puri, the seven moksha-giving cities of India, and both shrines have lived long, layered histories — celebrated in the epics and Puranas, raised and razed and raised again across the centuries, and carried in unbroken devotion all the while. Their modern rebirths — Mathura's Katra Keshav Dev complex completed in 1982, and Ayodhya's Ram Mandir consecrated in January 2024 — are among the most significant events of living Hindu history.
The two make a natural pilgrimage pair: Ram Navami fills Ayodhya each spring with the celebration of Rama's birth, and Janmashtami wakes Mathura at midnight for Krishna's — the same festival of divine descent, sung in two cities, half a year apart.
The Pilgrimage Circuit
Ayodhya and Mathura are both counted in the Sapta Puri, the seven sacred cities. Pilgrims often pair Ayodhya with Kashi and Prayagraj along the Ganga plain, and Mathura with the wider Braj circuit of Vrindavan, Govardhan and Barsana.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Janmabhoomi temple?+
A Janmabhoomi (birthplace) temple stands on the ground where an avatar of Vishnu is believed to have been born — Rama at Ayodhya and Krishna at Mathura. The sanctum marks the janmasthan itself, making these among the most emotionally charged shrines in the Hindu world.
Which temples are covered here?+
The Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir at Ayodhya, consecrated on 22 January 2024, where Rama is worshipped as the infant Ram Lalla; and the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi complex at Mathura, built over the prison cell where Krishna is believed to have been born.
Are Ayodhya and Mathura part of the Sapta Puri?+
Yes — both belong to the Sapta Puri, the seven cities whose darshan is held to bestow moksha: Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar, Kashi, Kanchipuram, Ujjain and Dwarka.
When is the best time to visit the Janmabhoomi shrines?+
Ram Navami (March–April) is the great festival of Ayodhya and Janmashtami (August–September) of Mathura — the birthdays themselves. October to March offers the most comfortable weather for both cities.
